Three persons, including a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader, shot an assistant sub-inspector of the Punjab Police dead on the GT road near the Chheharta police station here on Wednesday afternoon when the police official confronted them for repeatedly teasing his daughter.
Ravinder Pal Singh, was posted at the Gharinda police station near the Attari border.
A case has been registered under section 302 (murder) of the IPC and various sections of the Arms Act against district SAD unit general secretary Ranjit Singh Rana, Gurveer Singh and an unidentified person.
The accused, who were in an SUV, initially fired two bullets in the ASI's leg and left. Nearby residents informed the police about the incident, but the police failed to reach the spot. The accused returned about 20 minutes later with a rifle and shot Ravinder Pal in the chest. The ASI was rushed to hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
Ravinder Pal's daughter Robanjit Kaur also suffered a hand injury. The police said the injury was caused by a splinter.
"The girl had complained to her parents that the accused had been frequently teasing her while she wen for her tuitions. When she spotted their SUV on Wednesday afternoon, she called up her father, who immediately came to the spot and confronted the accused. A heated argument ensued, followed by firing," Amritsar police commissioner Ram Singh said.
He said he was not aware of Rana's Akali connection.
SSP Amritsar (rural) PS Virk said there were three persons in the SUV, but no arrests had been made so far.
Though the police did not confirm it, sources said Rana had fired at the cop. "We are still investigating this," said Ram Singh.
