For 26-year-old motorist Ibrahim Shaikh, an attempt to do a good deed turned into a nightmarish experience when he was assaulted and robbed of Rs70,000 after he stopped his two-wheeler to help out a man who was pretending to limp.
The police are yet to identify the robbers. The
incident occurred at around 10.20pm on Thursday on Flank Road near Kings Circle station, which is usually isolated, said the police.
Shaikh, a Wadala resident who works as an equipment handler at the Sahar international airport, was riding to a petrol pump on the road, when a man who was limping asked Shaikh for a lift. “He felt bad for the man, who he thought was disabled. He stopped the two-wheeler and asked him to sit,” said Vinod Randive, inspector, Sion police station.
When Shaikh stopped the bike, three men, their faces covered with handkerchiefs, came from behind the vehicle and hit a shocked Shaikh on the head. The ‘disabled’ man also assaulted him. “The group tried to snatch my chain and when I resisted, they dragged me to the bushes nearby and robbed me at knife-point,” Shaikh told HT.
The accused took two gold chains and rings worth Rs70,000 from the victim, Randive said.
They also took his wallet and mobile, but Shaikh pleaded them to return these. An officer said that the accused then took out the money from his wallet and returned it, with the cell phone, to Shaikh. Shaikh sustained minor injuries in the attack.
Shaikh then returned home and narrated the incident to his family. They approached the Sion police station and registered a case of robbery against unidentified persons. The police said that Shaikh could not catch a glimpse of the accused’s’ faces as it was dark and their faces were covered. “We will record his statement in a few days, when his state of mind is better, and ask him if he can give any details of their appearance,” Randive said.
The police plan to send plainclothes policemen to the area on two-wheelers to lay a trap and catch the accused. “We are also interrogating people in the area who have a past record of similar crimes,” Randive said.
