Ten months after a woman was found dead in Sangrur district's Sunam town, the police on Sunday registered a case of murder against her daughter-in-law and a man said to be her boyfriend.
The accused, identified as Geeta Rani and Malkeet Singh, have been arrested and remanded in two-day police custody. The case was registered on a complaint by Naresh Kumar, the son of the deceased woman, a police official said.

Investigating officer Satnam Singh said they had booked the two after Naresh Kumar approached them, alleging that his wife, Geeta Rani, and Malkeet Singh had planned the murder of his mother, Fulha Rani, who was found dead on February 5, this year.

The police said the matter came to light when Naresh got wind of his wife's relationship with Malkeet. "Geeta's paramour started threatening Naresh of facing the same fate his mother did," the police said.

So far, the police suspect, Fulha was strangulated to death after she caught her daughter-in-law in a compromising position with Malkeet. "At that time, the accused persons claimed that Fulha died of a heart attack and cremated her body," the police official added. As per the police, the duo has confessed to the murder.
