Taking note of unauthorised construction going on unabated near its head office, the municipal corporation has finally sprung into action and sought a report on it.
The civic body had come under criticism for turning a blind to the unauthorised building that has been coming up near the MC Zone-A office for the past one year.

However, now Kamaljit Kaur, assistant town planner (ATP), Zone-A office, has issued directions to the officials concerned to compile a report on these unauthorised buildings.

"I am aware of the unauthorised building near the MC office and others in the area. I have asked officials to provide me with a detailed report on these buildings at the earliest. These were constructed more than eight months ago, while I joined this zone six months ago," she said.

Kaur said, "After I get the report, I will forward it to the municipal town planner for further action."

Among the buildings in question is that of Vikrant hotel, whose two floors have been constructed illegally during renovation.

The matter was brought to light before the MC officials, but no action was taken.

A complaint was also filed regarding the illegal buildings with the deputy mayor, RD Sharma. Sharma said he had asked the ATP of the concerned area to provide him with the status of the building.

"I had got a complaint regarding Vikrant hotel and have asked the officials to look into the matter. I am yet to receive the report, but we will surely take action if any discrepancies are found," he said.

The illegal construction right next to an MC office has raised questions if there was a nexus between the MC officials and those constructing the building.

"MC has inspectors to check any illegal construction in different areas of the city. However, no report or action against the illegal buildings indicates that these inspectors are hand in gloves with those defying the law," said a source in the MC.
