Former Ferozepur SSP Gurcharan Singh Pherurai has approached the Punjab and Haryana high court in an appeal against the two-year jail sentence awarded to him by a Patiala court for paying a bribe of Rs. 70 lakh to former chairman of Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) for getting his daughter selected as Punjab Civil Services officer in 2002.

After trial in the case for about 10 years, Patiala special CBI court judge KC Gupta had on November 26 handed over the sentence to Pherurai while deciding that he had bribed former PPSC chairman Ravinderpal Singh Sidhu for the selection of his daughter Kuljeet Kaur. Kuljeet is no more in service now.

Though the petition came up for heairng before the bench headed by justice Paramjeet Singh on Tuesday, as the bench recused from hearing the case, it would now come up for hearing before the other bench later this week.

The petitioner, in his petition, has said that the court had erred in its judgment, and has raised various questions on the conduct of trial in the case.

The FIR was registered in the case against Pherurai on September 5, 2002 and the first chargesheet was presented by the vigilance bureau in 2003. As per the chargesheet, after taking the bribe from Pherurai in Chandigarh, Sidhu had handed him over the question papers of English and criminal law.
