Though the statewide door-to-door cancer survey is not complete yet, but some astonishing figures have come to the fore, particularly in parts of Malwa region.
The survey is an unscientific collection of data based on people's opinion, and thus as many as 419 deaths have been attributed to cancer in Barnala district, while in Sangrur the number is 1,307, in the past five years.

Barnala civil surgeon Dr Baldev Raj said field surveyors have covered around 45% of the district and have collected vital information from around 2.8 lakh people. So far, 633 suspected cancer cases have been reported, besides 330 persons having been diagnosed with the disease.

About the methodology of the survey, the civil surgeon said, "Data is acquired from information provided by the people themselves, and there is no medical confirmation of cancer deaths over the past five years yet. We have figured out suspected case on the basis of 12 symptoms."

"In Barnala city itself, as many as 115 cancer deaths have been reported, while 126 confirmed cases of cancer have come to fore. Besides, we have asked 192 people to go in for laboratory tests after they suspected that they had cancer," he said.

When it comes to Barnala's rural area, including Dhanaula, Tapa and Mehlan Kalan, 207 cancer deaths have been reported. However, 125 cases confirmed cases of different types of cancer have been also reported.

"The field staff have been instructed to minutely scrutinise people on the basis of 12 symptoms", he said.

In Sangrur district, 1,307 cancer deaths have been reported so far after around 8.07 lakh people were surveyed. Here, 913 confirmed cases of cancer and 4,596 suspected cases have also been recorded.
