The young couple who on Wednesday alleged that they had been harassed by four presidential guards at the Buddha Jayanti Park in Chanakyapuri did not turn up a day later at the area police station to lodge a formal complaint. The four guards, or Sawaars, too did not come to the police station to respond to enquiries about the alleged incident or to lodge a complaint with regard to their informal complaint that some policemen and people at the park had extorted money after beating them up.

The assistant commissioner of police of New Delhi district’s public grievance cell has been asked to conduct an investigation into the incident. On the other hand, a parallel inquiry has been initiated by the office of presidential security.

The matter is being handled in all seriousness keeping in mind the infamous 2002 Buddha Jayanti Park gang rape. Five presidential guards had raped a girl then. 

Sources said the police officers present at the park told their seniors that the four guards had molested the woman and beaten up her male friend when he objected. Three of the guards fled the spot after people gathered there, but one was caught and handed over to the police.
