Two men have been arrested for “assisting” Sukhdev Singh Namdhari, under arrest for the murder of slain liquor baron Ponty Chadha’s brother Hardeep, in his alleged bid to forcibly possess the property where the shootout took place last month, the police said on Thursday.
28-year-old men, Simranjeet Singh and Jagbir Singh, who hailed from Rampur in Uttar Pradesh, had accompanied Namdhari during the initial attempt to forcibly occupy the contentious farmhouse located at 42, DLF Chhatarpur, on the morning of November 17, SBS Tyagi, the deputy commissioner of police (crime and railways), said.
“We have found a .315-bore rifle with seven cartridges and a 12-bore DBBL gun with 10 live cartridges from their possession,” said DCP Tyagi.
So far, the police said, as many as 10 persons, including Namdhari and his personal security officer Sachin Tyagi, have been arrested in separate cases registered under different sections for murder and trespassing.
According to the police, Namdhari that morning brought a number of his associates who had been assisting Ponty in the “smooth sailing of his trades” across Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab.
He had reached the disputed property armed with weapons, hockey sticks and baseball bats to take over the property.
“Two criminal cases, one of forcible dispossession during which Hardeep Singh was murdered and the other of the murder of Ponty Chadha, were registered, and those already under arrest are being interrogated by the special investigation team of the crime branch to get to the bottom of the matter,” DCP Tyagi added.
Ponty Chadha and his younger brother Hardeep were killed allegedly at the hands of each other’s men on the morning of November 17.
BJP Delhi pradesh president Vijender Gupta has demanded an inquiry into alleged links between Delhi ministers Arvinder Singh and Haroon Yusuf and Hardeep Singh and his brother Ponty Chaddha.
“What is wrong in people talking over phones? We don’t know what the context and the content of the calls made,” chief minister Sheila Dikshit said.
