Seven physically challenged persons of Raninagar village of Behrampore block in Murshidabad haven’t been receiving their disability allowance from the government in the alleged non-cooperation of a bank.
As a result, the poor people are literally living by eating once a day for the last
Sources said that on the basis of disability of a person, he or she gets a monthly amount from the government as their disability allowance. Till now the disabled persons used to get the amount from the post office. But recently, the government has ordered that a person need to have a bank account to receive their allowance.
The monthly allowance will be credited every month to the recipient’s account from where he is supposed to draw the amount from the bank directly. But this decision has left the seven disabled persons of the village in deep trouble.
Bani Israil, a blind person of Raninagar village said, “I lost my eyesight back in 2000. My family includes two daughters, a son and my wife. Earlier, I used to get Rs. 750 as allowance. But I haven’t received it for the last nine months now.”
He said, “My wife, Akrama Bibi, works as a cook in a self help group. I am very much depended on the government aid for my children’s education.
Nine months ago, the Block Welfare Officer served us a notice to open a bank account at Bangiyo Gramin Bikash Bank, Bazarpara branch, where we will get the allowance.
Since then, almost every week we have been visiting the branch with the request to open a bank account. But till date, the bank manager hasn’t given us the nod to open the bank account in the branch of the disabled persons of my native village. As a result, we aren’t getting the allowance for several months.”
Amanullah Sheikh, another beneficiary of the disability allowance and a blind person of the same village said, “In the previous system, the postman used to come to our home and gave the amount. But now, the government has ordered that we will have to go to the bank to get the allowance.
But the Bangiyo Gramin Bikash Bank manager isn’t interested to open our account in his branch. Whenever we met him with the request he gives us some other date to come and meet him to open the new account. Yesterday we were told to meet the manager on December 15 for this purpose.”
Amanullah said, “There are five blind and two orthopaedic disabled persons in this village who used to get the disability allowance. But none of us have been receiving it.”
