A strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of central Indonesia Monday, the US Geological Survey said, but local seismologists ruled out any threat of a tsunami.

The quake struck at 09:16 GMT at a depth of 18 kilometres (11 miles), more than 160 kilometres south-southeast of Gorontalo in central Indonesia's Sulawesi island.
