Two bullets were recovered from Ranjit Singh Rana, the since-expelled Akali leader who is in judicial custody for the December 5 murder of an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), in the Amritsar Central Jail on Wednesday.
The .12-bore bullets were apparently handed to Rana by two visitors, as the jail staff found the bullets from him in a search soon after the visitors left. As the jail staff sent a complaint, the police registered a case under the Arms Act against Rana, who had been sent in judicial custody on Tuesday after remaining in the custody of the Amritsar police.

The record of the visitors, said to be Rana's relatives, is supposed to be in the jail log.

Confirming the FIR, police commissioner Ram Singh said, "We are probing how the bullets were smuggled inside the jail and what was the motive."

Rana, a former general secretary of the Shiroamni Akali Dal (SAD) district unit, had allegedly gunned down Punjab police ASI Ravinder Pal Singh at Chhehrata in Amritsar after the ASI had objected to the harassment of his daughter by Rana and his men.

Repeated efforts to contact the jail authorities bore no fruit.
