Chief minister Narendra Modi was on Thursday elected to the Gujarat assembly from Maninagar constituency in Ahmedabad's outskirts.

Modi defeated Congress' Shweta Bhatt, wife of suspended police officer Sanjeev Bhatt, officials said. The victory triggered celebrations by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters.
