Academy Award-winning composer AR Rahman waited 15 years to release his second solo project. 'Infinite Love', his new single, is about optimism and love. He talks about his recent offering and upcoming ventures. Talk us through the song, and how it took shape. After all, you are working on a solo project after such a long time.
After 'Vande Mataram', nothing was compelling enough for me to take on. But two years ago, after the Oscars, I decided that I wanted to showcase some Indian musical expressions to the world. This song has multiple layers; it says many things. I realised that love is not just a feeling between a man and a woman. It's also the emotion that leads to other qualities like tolerance and charity. But people forget that. So I feel they need to be reminded about it. I've let the song take its own course.

How did the partnership with Nita Ambani come about?
I met Mukeshji (Ambani) and he said, why not compose a song on the unification of the world? I told him that I already have a song. So he introduced me to Nitaji (Ambani). They both loved the song and helped me by getting it across to the world.

So was it coincidental that your song was ready just around the time when there were rumours about the world coming to an end?
Though I never believed in the rumours that the world would come to an end, I felt the need to talk about hope and love. I feel that the world will end when humanity dies. The Delhi rape case is like doomsday for all of us.

Are you working on more singles to compile in an album?
Yes, but we will first see what sort of feedback we receive for this single. Till now, we have been getting kind remarks.

Like this song, will the album have love as its theme?
Yes, I'd also like the songs to talk about positivity.

You've been working on the music for Raanjhana. How is it coming along?
I've been enjoying myself. There's also Mani Ratnam's Kadal that I'm working on. The story is about a Christian fisherman and how faith can sometimes lead to the triumph of humanity. This project has been exciting because I've experimented with gospel music in it.
