Over 90% of the accused in Delhi are first-time offenders, showing scarce regard for law in the national Capital where the crime graph has been rising steadily.
It goes on to establish the pressing need for an effective community policing, apart from an efficient crime-curbing
strategy on part of the police.
The Delhi Police had launched 'Yuva', a scheme to stop young people from going astray.
"There is a need to catch them young, channelise their energy and engage them in various activities so that they don't get diverted towards crime. It is more of a social problem and youths living in slum clusters need counselling so that we could stop them from taking up crime. 'Yuva' is a good initiative and should reach every corner of Delhi," said a former Delhi Police officer, requesting anonymity.
'Yuva' is not only limited to engaging the youth in sports activities; the police have gone a step ahead and arranged various programmes to help them in getting job.
Recently, additional CP (southeast) Ajay Chaudhry started a programme under which young boys and girls from Pul Prahladpur area were given hotel management training and were assured of a job too.
"By giving young boys and girls from Pul Prahladpur training, which would help him in getting a job means we have ensured that at least one youth would not turn to crime. More such initiatives should be taken," the officer further said.
The Central district police are in touch with jeans manufacturing units and hotel associations, urging them to provide job to unemployed youth living in the nearby areas.
"They are the ones who commit petty crimes. Since there are many job opportunities in Central Delhi, we thought of talking to those who can offer them opportunities," a senior police officer said.
The police said that the scheme would also help bridge the gap between police and the youth. Recently, competitive exam coaching was arranged at Jamia Nagar police station.
The DDA has provided 11 playgrounds to the police in areas close to the slums.
