Parents of the 21-year-old girl, who was stabbed by her classmate Nikhil Bankar on Saturday, had complained to the college authorities about him trying to pressurise her into starting a relationship.
The college authorities along with the police had also initiated the process
of counselling Bankar last month.
The victim and Bankar, 21, a resident of government colony in Bandra (E), were students at Chetana College. The girl was staying with her uncle in Kalina, Santacruz, whereas her parents stayed at Mira Road. According to the police press note, Saturday’s incident revealed that Bankar and the girl were seeing each other and had been close friends.
Vishwas Nangre Patil, additional commissioner of police (West region) said, “The girl’s parents objected to their closeness and hence complained to college authorities and the police. Since then, the boy was being counselled by the police and the college authorities in the presence of his parents.”
Ever since the girl’s parents raised their objection and started seeing to it that Bankar stays away from her, their friendship has been strained.
The victim’s uncle had also approached the Kherwadi police and had complained against Bankar stating that the latter was forcing the victim to have a relationship with him.
After Bankar was counselled, his parents had even given an undertaking stating that he would not pose a problem for the girl again.
His parents, however, alleged that the girl would tease Bankar frequently. The police are, however, unclear of what provoked the boy and led him to take such a drastic step on Saturday.
The Kherwadi police have registered a case against Bankar under Sections 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and further investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, the attack inside the college building has left the students of Chetana College shocked as nobody anticipated such an incident to take place within a week of the police conducting a sensitistion session in the same college.
