During the 90-minute meeting, in which Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi, minister of state for home RPN Singh and party leader Renuka Chowdhary were also present, Sonia Gandhi promised the protesters that speedy action would be taken against those who brutally raped a 23-year-old physiotherapist in a moving luxury bus on December 16.
The representatives put forth a list of 14 suggestions to improve the safety of women in Delhi.
"The government has heard the protesters loud and clear and is willing to listen to their demands. The suggestions given to us have been noted down and they (protesters) were briefed about the steps the government has taken so far and is planning to take," said RPN Singh, addressing the media after the meeting was over.
The representatives said they were satisfied. "We are very pleased with what Sonia Gandhi told us in the meeting. All our suggestions were heard… We will tell our fellow protesters that we will be heard by the government but we should not stop our protest," said one of the representatives.
During the discussion, Singh said, Rahul Gandhi told the youths that their protest is an emotive issue which should not lose its rationality. "Decision-making should happen in a rational manner and it cannot be driven merely by emotions," Singh said on behalf of Rahul Gandhi.
