With last-minute New Year shopping moving online, police and cyber experts have warned against fake websites and emails that lure you with heavy discounts and gain access to your bank accounts.

“During Christmas and New Year time, customers are in a joyous mood and tend to get careless. Cyber criminals take advantage of this and make fake pages or get details of their back accounts by sending links,” said cyber expert Vijay Mukhi.

Customers should not rush through the security procedure while making online purchases as cyber criminals bank on people’s haste to steal important online details during the festive season.

Police have asked customers to verify offers in bogus emails and websites, which set up dummy webpages with names of banks or online companies for transactions.

Nandkishore More, senior inspector from BKC police station, said, “People should verify the authenticity of big discount offers before giving out any of their personal information.”
