Talking to the media on the sidelines of a function to a mark the 308th martyrdom day of Guru Gobind Singh's mother Mata Gujar Kaur and sons Fateh Singh and Zorawar Singh, Badal was replying to a query on the Delhi gangrape that has ignited protests across the country. "Awarding the severest punishment to the culprits of rape is within the domain of the Centre, and I believe the offence should be made non-bailable," he said.
The CM also spoke in favour of fast-track courts for heinous crimes like rape: "Our government had already urged the chief justice of Punjab and Haryana high court to earmark some such courts."
Asked about the ruckus in the recently concluded winter session of the Vidhan Sabha, Badal said, "It's unfortunate that the Congress, being the opposition party, had prepared to boycott the session from the first day. My efforts to persuade the party to join the session went in vain."
Earlier, speaking about the martyrs from the family of the tenth Sikh master Guru Gobind Singh, he said, "The supreme sacrifice of the younger Sahibzadas and Mata Gujar Kaur are unprecedented in the annals of history."
