Succumbing to public pressure, the police on Tuesday said they would not proceed further against a 23-year-old woman for allegedly participating in the 2010 street protests.

“The government has announced the police will not proceed further against (Zahida) Akhtar, against whom there are no serious charges of violence,” said inspector general of police SM Sahai in a statement in Srinagar. Akhtar, injured in October 2010, had been arrested on December 21 and booked under charges of rioting and attempt to murder.

She was released on bail the next day. Sahai said cases had been lodged against people involved in various acts of disturbances in 2010.

Life comes to a standstill in kashmir
Srinagar: Business and other activities came to a halt in Yamrash Yaripora and adjacent villages of Kulgam district, where two LeT militants were killed by security forces on Monday night.

A policeman also  lost his life in the encounter. Shops and business establishments remained closed.
