The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) on Friday sealed AB Grains Spirit Mill at Kirhi Afghana village in the district for causing air and water pollution in the area. Board chairman Ravinder Singh said a high-level team of the PPCB led by Sanjeev Bahl, executive officer, Hoshiarpur, had raided the sugar mill and distillery on December 16.

He said the raiding team took samples of water and other emissions from the mill. The PPCB chairman said after finding water and air polluted, the board, on December 20, issued notice under Section 33-A of the Water Act, 1974, to the mill authorities for appearing before the PPCB for hearing at its office in Patiala on December 27.

He added that sugar mill chief executive officer Anil Vanjani and vice-president Rakesh Kumar appeared before the PPCB to explain their case, but the PPCB found their reply unsatisfactory and decided to seal the boiler of the co-generation plant and fermentation section of the distillery.
