The Punjab unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) on Saturday sought immediate intervention of chief minister Parkash Singh Badal to divest deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal of the home affairs and justice portfolio and also sack DGP Sumedh Singh Saini for their failure to restore
peace and law and order in the state.
Joginder Dayal, a member of the CPI national executive, said it was high time Badal took back reins of the Shiromani Akali Dal and not let lawlessness and anarchy become the order of the day in Punjab. "People of Punjab had voted for Badal to be the chief minister but he seems to be not in command," added Dayal.
Dayal said Badal should immediately strip Sukhbir of the home affairs and justice department as the latter was unable to handle it. Instead of maintaining peace in the state, Sukhbir has pushed Punjab towards anarchy and lawlessness, he added.
Dayal said Sukhbir's brother-in-law Bikram Singh Majithia, a cabinet minister, had openly abused a Congress MLA but instead of reprimanding Majithia, he (Sukhbir) had supported him all along.
He said Badal should also sack Saini, who had not been able to instill confidence among the police force to act tough against perpetrators of crime. Under Saini's command, more policemen seemed to have been indulging in criminal activities than before, Dayal claimed.
"Whether it is the abduction of a minor girl from Faridkot, the killing of an ASI in Amritsar, or the gangrape victim who committed suicide in Patiala district, the role of the police in all cases has been deplorable, to say the least. Hence, Saini should be immediately removed for the benefit of the state, which has an age-old history and culture of honour and bravery," said Dayal.
He said Saini was now trying to raise the bogey of revival of terrorism in Punjab to divert people's attention from the real issues.
Dayal also demanded that Badal should immediately dissolve the Students Organisation of India (SOI) and the Youth Akali Dal (YAD) to keep a check on anti social elements in the state.
CPI state secretary Bant Singh Brar said many shameful acts of lawlessness had occurred in Punjab in recent times and the Punjab government had been found completely inept and incompetent to handle them.
The CPI has called upon its workers and cadres to hold protest demonstrations against the SAD-BJP government across the state till peace and law and order is restored in the state.
