As part of their security plan on New Year’s eve, the Gurgaon police have decided to make MG Road a vehicle-free zone from 9pm to 2am.

Visitors will be asked to park their vehicles at a parking lot created in Leisure Valley Ground, Sector 29, from where a shuttle bus service will ferry them up to MG Road.

Cycle rickshaws and auto-rickshaws will also be off the road.

“The aim is to make the main carriageway of the stretch between Iffco Chowk and Sikanderpur Metro Station a vehicle-free zone on the night of December 31 when celebrations are on in full swing,” said DCP (east) Maheshwar Dayal.

He said they had also taken the approval of resident bodies of the gated communities located along MG Road before implementing the decision.

However, residents of gated communities such as Heritage City, Beverley Park I & II and Essel Towers along MG Road will be allowed to use the service lanes to drive down to their apartments on New Year’s eve.

The city has 213 pubs of which, 50 are located on the 2.5 km-stretch on the MG Road. Sahara Mall has five pubs. Several cases of eve-teasing and brawls have been reported from MG Road in the recent past.
