The Jalandhar Police Commissionerate have launched a 24x7 helpline for women. The idea is to address a complaint as soon as possible and instill a sense of security among the women.
Women can call toll-free number 1091 with their grievances. Another number where grievances can be
registered and help sought is 95929-18503, which will be a paid call, said police commissioner Gaurav Yadav.
"The helpline has been launched to relieve women from molestation, sexual harassment, domestic violence," he said adding that, "It would also avoid inconvenience to complainants, who sometimes hesitate to visit police stations."
ADCP Diljinder Singh Dhillon said, "We have deputed three women employees to attend calls on the helpline numbers so that women can feel free to discuss their problems. We have also created a flying squad of women, comprising a woman subinspector as in charge, an assistant sub inspector and four women constables, to tackle emergencies."
"At the first instance, when a woman will call on these numbers, the police control room will respond within minutes. If the issue is not addressed, then the all-women flying squad would reach the aggrieved and try to sort out the matter. Additional help could always be given, depending on need."
Complaints registered on the helpline and the action taken would be under the direct supervision of the police commissioner, who would assess the situation on a daily basis, Dhillon added.
"We have also provided a separate interface on our portal jalandharpolice.com with a caption 'women-in distresses where aggrieved women can register their grievance with an option to hide their identity if they wish," Dhillon added.
"It was a much-awaited and a big breakthrough for women, especially girls who can come forward and bring a change in the society," said Seema Chopra, a social worker.
"It is a positive step. Police should publicise these numbers. It is a beginning and needs to be implemented with sincerity. The police also publicize these numbers in educational institutes and must teach women the basics in self-defence," said Kulwinder Kaur, a professor.
