A day after registering a case of rape against three persons, including a head constable, following a complaint by a girl in Ajnala, the Amritsar (rural) police said on Sunday that there seemed to be some inconsistencies in the complaint, which they were thoroughly investigating to bring out the
Addressing mediapersons here, Amritsar (rural) SSP PS Virk said, "We stand by the FIR, but we have our doubts. It is not that we are giving anybody a clean chit. An SP-rank officer has been asked to investigate the matter thoroughly."
The SSP said that since the girl had levelled serious charges, they had to register a case, but if anybody was found innocent in the course of investigations, that person would not be chargesheeted.
"In the preliminary probe, we found that there was no element of pressure or threat when the girl married Gurcharan Singh, nephew of head constable Kulwinder Singh. This is the reason why we have our doubts. The matter needs to be investigated in detail," said Virk, pointing out that the parents of the complainant had also attended her wedding.
The girl has alleged that head constable Kulwinder Singh first misled her by claiming that he would secure a job for her in the Punjab Police and then forced her to marry his nephew Gurcharan Singh.
She claimed that both Gurcharan and head constable Kulwinder Singh raped he. The head constable's wife has also been booked for conniving in the crime.
Although the girl had lodged the complaint with the Amritsar (rural) police on December 21, the case was registered almost a week later.
Referring to another rape case involving a newly married woman in Bhindi Saidan village, the SSP said that of the two youth booked in this regard, one had been arrested, but even this case needed to be thoroughly investigated. "We have come to know that one of the accused, Manjit, was known to the woman. So we have marked an inquiry," he said.
