The Delhi Police, on Monday, registered a criminal case against the editor and employees of a prominent English daily for publishing material which could lead to the identification of the 23-year-old gangrape victim. According to police, a case under section 228 of the IPC was registered at the Vasant Vihar police station on the basis of articles and pictures published in Monday edition of the said newspaper. "The paper has published a picture of the victim's father and brother prominently and disclosed other particulars which might lead the general public to ascertain her given name," said an officer.

According to the IPC section, whoever prints or publishes the name or any matter which may make known the identity of any person against whom an offence under section 376 (the criminal section for rape), is alleged or found to have been committed, may be punished with imprisonment for up to two years and shall also be liable for fine.

"There are certain conditions such as seeking the permission of a police officer which need to be met before publishing such facts," the officer added.
