Hundreds of people thronging markets, bus stops and public places is the best way to make the city safer for women, believe those participating in a sit-in dharna called Reclaim the Night that was held at Munirka and Saket on Monday night. Candles in hand and slogans on their lips, hundreds of JNU students marched from their campus to the Munirka bus stop from where the 23-year-old gangrape victim was picked up.

“There are people who believe that security comes from creating boundaries. But security is about inclusion. Women need to be included in public life to make our country safer,” said Nivedita, a JNU student who goes by her first name and was part of the dharna.

A number of cultural programmes, including street plays, were also held at JNU.

A number of students, including many women, also congregated at the Anupam Complex, Saket.

“According to me, the only way to make the city safer is having more women and men on the streets after dark. Imposing restrictions on movement does more harm than good. It is a documented fact that areas with large number of street vendors are safer for women,” said Malliak Rajput, a Delhi University MA student who was part of the event.
