A 21-year-old girl, who was knocked down by a police van while she was riding her two-wheeler at Vile Parle on Sunday night, succumbed to her injuries early Monday. Both the girl and her younger brother, who was riding pillion, sustained injuries and were rushed to Nanavati hospital, where the girl succumbed to injuries late in the night, while the brother is recuperating. A case of causing death due to negligence has been registered against the driver, a constable, but he is yet to be arrested.

Avani Desai, 21, who was working as an animator in an IT firm, was riding to her Vile Parle (West) residence with her brother Varun, 11, at around 9.30pm when her bike slipped on Shahaji Raje Road in Vile Parle (East). It ran over the divider and came in the way of a Qualis police van, the police said.

When asked why the driver, constable Jalindar Bhosale, has not been arrested, an officer from Vile Parle police said, “We are probing if she sustained injuries because her head hit the divider, or after coming under the Qualis.”
