Convene a special session of Parliament to revise rape laws The Opposition’s appeal to the government to convene a special session of Parliament to revise laws related to women’s safety is justified and it’s surprising that the UPA hasn’t accepted it so far (Wait for panel report: Govt to oppn on special House session, January 1). The nation expects the UPA to learn lessons from the Delhi gang rape incident and make amends so that women don’t have to worry about their safety in public places. A special session of Parliament is the need of the hour and it’s a chance for the UPA to show the country that it cares about people.

His views are a threat to India

The editorial Something is rotten here (Our Take, December 29) is right in criticising President Pranab Mukherjee’s son Abhijit Mukherjee for his insensitive remarks on the women who protested at India Gate recently. He cannot just shoot off his mouth and apologise after the entire nation condemns his barb. Women will not be safe in India as long as there are misogynists like Mukherjee. His Talibanesque views are a threat to the future of the country.

Let’s give Aadhaar a chance

This refers to Abhijit Banerjee’s article New day, new start (Poverty Line, January 1). There is no doubt that the Aadhaar project has a lot of potential and, if executed and run efficiently, it would go a long way towards plugging many loopholes in our public distribution system and other welfare schemes. The criticism over the possible misuse of the Aadhaar data should not be taken seriously, as any new scheme is bound to raise a few eyebrows. At the moment, its benefits outweigh its cons and we must give the government a fair chance to prove that the system can work.
