Drivers, conductors and ticket checkers of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) on Wednesday took a pledge at Jantar Mantar, promising to make public transport safer for women.

"We will fight for the equality and dignity of women and will not tolerate any more similar incidents in Delhi, especially in DTC buses," said Shankaran from the DTC workers' unity centre.

Of the 30-odd people assembled at the site, a few talked of how they have witnessed harassments in buses and have tried to help.

"In my bus I ensure that men do not sit on the seats reserved for women. Many a times I have had to throw men out for bad behaviour," said one of the members, a conductor.

The workers also wrote a memorandum to the transport minister, requesting him for more buses.

"There is currently a need of at least 2,500 more DTC buses on the roads," added Shankaran.
