Atul Kasbekar is perhaps India’s best-known photographer. A graduate of the Brooks Institute, Santa Barbara, USA, he has been shooting in India since 1991. His work appears in editions of Cosmopolitan, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, L`Officiel and Vogue on a regular basis. He conceived the iconic
Kingfisher Calendar which is now a cult phenomenon and is seen as a platform for Indian fashion. He is also a brand ambassador for the Panasonic Lumix range of cameras and has been the honorary chairman of the Photographer’s Guild of India since its inception.
Travel to him is, a fringe benefit of his work. The only thing he avoids while travelling are “people he knows back home in Mumbai”. His most memorable vacation was camping with his then five-year old twins in Corsica. He defines his travel style as “pre arranged, comfortable and unhurried”. Tourism in India, according to him can be further improved by, significantly better connectivity in all forms of transport at all levels. Excerpts from a chat with him:
1. Where did you vacation last?
Italy, we were sailing off the Amalfi coast with some friends who had a suitable vessel for the same.
2. How do you decide on where to go?
I don't, the wife decides, and she's very good at it, so I go with the flow.
3. While on holiday, what are the things you like to do?
Eat, drink, make out, sleep (in any order), then repeat (in any order).
4. Any exotic vacations that you have taken?
Most shoots end up being mini vacations. The Soneva properties in the Maldives and Thailand are quite something! It's a good thing someone else paid for them.
5. What are your 5 must-pack items?
Swim shorts, roaming SIM card for the Blackberry and iPad, the one jacket I can wear on anything (just in case), credit cards, sunglasses.
6. Your favourite travel destinations?
A friend of mine has season tickets to the Arsenal games, I try and manoeuvre one trip during EPL season to catch at least a one-home game. Watched seven so far over the years and Arsenal has NEVER lost when I'm in the stadium.
