A day after the Punjab government's NRI Commission issued notice to Ludhiana police to probe the alleged grabbing of land premises inhabiting the controversial restobar 'The Hub', former Congress MLA reiterated his demand for a CBI probe into the matter. Addressing a press conference here, Khaira stated that the "any state-owned agency" could not be relied upon as Maninder Pal Singh Johar alias Sunny Johar, who had allegedly grabbed the land illegally enjoyed the political patronage of the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).

The Commission had acted following the  HT news report 'NRI accuses officials of helping Johar grab his land' (dated January 1, 2013) that how the US-based NRI Hardial Singh Hundal had been fighting a losing battle for the right to his erstwhile property. Hundal, through his relatives, had been lodging complaints with the Ludhiana police and also moved the Ludhiana local court but in vain till now.

 Khaira circulated the copies of certain documents in support of Hundal as the genuine owner of the premises that was now worth crores of rupees in Ludhiana.

The premises had come into limelight after AIG S S Mand, a PPS officer was assaulted at the said restobar last month.

 "Let the CBI or any other neutral central agency probe the matter," Khaira said.

He even introduced one Sukhpal Gill as a brother-in-law of Hundal, who stated at the press conference that he and his wife, who is Hundal's sister, were being harassed by the state administration for taking up the ownership matter in the court against Sunny Johar.

He said his wife, Ranjana, was even "falsely trapped" as an accused in a human trafficking case. "She had never been a travel agent, but she remained in judicial custody for several days after the police booked in as a fake travel agent," Gill said at the press conference.
