A day after a case of ragging at the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) came to light, director of the institute Chetan Vaidya said that the college was thinking about segregating the first-year students from the seniors to avoid such cases in the future.
discussing a number of measures to make sure that such cases can be avoided in the future,” Vaidya said.
The case of ragging was reported to the college in September by the father of the 22-year-old student, Naveen Kujur, through fax.
According to college authorities, they set up an internal inquiry in the matter as soon as they received the complaint.
“The student did not come up to us himself. We only got a letter from his father through fax. The student did not name any of the seniors who ragged him. We set up an inquiry but no clues about the identity of the students who ragged Naveen came up. We then filed an FIR on December 3 after which the police has visited the hostel and is following up on the case,” Vaidya said.
The college, Vaidya said, offered him a special room in the ground floor of the hostel but the student had not responded to them.
Naveen Kujur was pursuing B. Architecture from SPA and received knee injuries on September 2 when he along with his classmates was ragged by their seniors in the hostel in south Delhi’s Taimoor Nagar, the police said.
The victim, a resident of Ranchi, returned to his house immediately after the incident. Getting on the train was also a challenge because of his injuries and he had to be helped by his friends.
Naveen told the police that he was forced to do hundreds of sit-ups, resulted in the severe injuries.
“Till now, my father has written several letters to the director of the college but could not get any reply from that side. When my father filed the report to Jharkhand High Court on November 26, the court directed Delhi Police to register the case. We came to know when an investigative officer called me and asked me to file the case,” said Naveen, who is undergoing treatment at Christian Medical College in Vellore.
