For one 16-year-old girl from Bangladesh, the new year started on a very good note.

Trafficked from her country in July and brought to Delhi, she was reunited with her parents on Wednesday. The Delhi police and Child Welfare Committee (CWC) helped in the cause and finally the girl boarded an Air India flight to home on Wednesday, after staying at a child shelter home in east Delhi for six months. Officials said in July 2012, the girl was seen roaming in Gandhi Nagar area by a PCR van. As she was unable to communicate in Hindi and a translator was hired and the girl was produced before the CWC.

"She said she was lured to Delhi on the pretext of a job. She was kept at a house in Gandhi Nagar in east Delhi by a boy but she somehow managed to escape. As she was not familiar with the city roads, she was lost when the police noticed her,” Ajay K Singh, chairperson of east CWC, said.

But the real work started after that as the CWC members decided to unite her to her parents. This was not an easy task as they had no information about the whereabouts of the girl's parents.

"But we managed to trace them and the girl spoke to them over the phone. She used to talk to them often and was happy that she is going home,” he added. 

The diplomatic and governmental procedure to repatriate the girl was initiated in July. An NGO here got in touch with a Bangladesh NGO and Bangladesh National Women's Lawyers Association (BNWLA). The association had made efforts to locate the family and the girl was flown by an Air India flight.

"The founder of BNWLA had come to India a few months ago to attend a seminar organised by an NGO-STOP. She had met the child and had given feedback about efforts made to send her home at the earliest," said Singh.
