A 48-year-old woman, Suman Mane, assaulted a woman police constable when the latter tried to intervene in a petty brawl at Ganesh Murthy Nagar slum in Cuffe Parade on Saturday.

The police said that the constable, Mangal Warang, had rushed to the spot when she heard loud cries of a girl around 3.30pm. But an irked Mane kicked and punched the policewoman. Warang sustained injuries to her back, face and stomach along with nail abrasions on her hands.

Warang was posted at the Ganesh Murthy Nagar beat chowky along with another woman constable, and an assistant police inspector.

“Mane overpowered the constable and began raining kicks and punches on her. Soon after, the other two policemen posted with her at the chowky arrived and took Mane to the beat chowky,” said Abusaheb Tamboli, inspector of Cuffe Parade police station.

“Minutes later one Eric Dhatingra landed at the chowky claiming he was an NCP activist. After threatening policemen they would lose their jobs for taking Mane into custody, he forcibly took Mane with him.”

Soon after, the beat chowky personnel informed their seniors at Cuffe Parade police station, and both Dhatingra and Mane were taken into custody.
