The court of sessions judge SK Aggarwal on Monday sentenced a Sector-56 resident, Rahul, to life term for raping his niece. A fine of Rs. 21,000 was also imposed on him.
It was a fast-track case where the order was pronounced in just three hearings.

The incident came to light in August 2012 when a 12-year-old girl of Sector 56 had to undergo an abortion after she was repeatedly raped by her uncle, Rahul.

The police had arrested 19-year-old Rahul for raping and threatening the victim, a student of Class 8 in a government school. She was said to be 22-week-old pregnant. Rahul started committed the crime from January 2012.

She had told the police that she was raped three to four times at her house. Rahul, a labourer, threatened to kill the victim if she told anyone about it.

According to the police, the incident came to light after the victim complained of abdominal pain, following which she was taken to the SAS Nagar civil hospital. Having examined her, doctors found out that she was pregnant.

The police said a medical examination of the victim was held and her statement was recorded.

Her father is a gardener at PGI while her mother works as a domestic help. She has a younger and an elder brother. The court has also announced of a compensation of Rs. 15,000 for the girl.
