There were two cadaver donations in the city within a span of 24 hours, giving six people a new lease of life.

On Saturday, doctors at PD Hinduja Hospital's intensive care unit identified a 58-year-old brain dead patient. The man's wife, Rita Patel, who is a nurse at the hospital's dialysis ward, immediately agreed to donate her husband's organs and corneas.

"She knew the plight of organ failure patients as she handles such patients regularly," said Dr Gustad Daver, director of PD Hinduja Hospital, Mahim.

Patel's donation gave a 17-year-old girl suffering from acute liver failure a second chance at life, said Dr Gautam Ramakantan, director of organ transplantation at Jupiter Hospital, Thane. Two other kidney failure patients underwent a transplant at Jupiter and Hinduja Hospital respectively.

Another family of a 36-year-old brain dead patient consented to donate his organs, corneas and skin. "He had a severe head injury in a road accident. The family readily agreed to donate," said Dr S Narayani, Fortis Hospital, Mulund. Two patients received a kidney and liver for transplant. The other kidney went to a patient at Hinduja.
