A 32-year-old woman allegedly attempted to commit suicide near the residence of zonal inspector general of police (IGP) Gurpreet Deo. However, alert women cops sensed her intentions and overpowered and detained her. The cops also recovered a poisonous substance from her pocket before detaining her.

Previously the woman, a Shahkot resident, had accused the police of inaction in her complaint against a 19-year-old man for abusing her sexually. She claimed that the man had misled her and developed intimate relations on the pretext of marrying her.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Rajinder Singh said that the alleged suicide attempt was a 'drama'. He said that after investigations into her complaint, it was found that the woman had married twice and that too without divorcing her first husband.

He added that she was now pressuring the 19-year-old to marry her and the police had detained her as a precautionary measure.
