It may not have remained even a pale shadow of Oxford, but as you enter Patna College, a plaque will instantly remind you how the institution was once called the 'Oxford of the east' due to its glorious track record and reputation.
"Patna College is the Oxford of the east, with no
Cambridge to compete with," reads the inscription on the plaque, to be unveiled by governor-cum-chancellor Devanand Konwar on Wednesday to mark the completion of 150th year of Patna College.
"We hope this will inspire the students of the present and coming generations to strive for reviving the old glory of the college," said Patna College principal, Rash Bihari Prasad Singh.
This will also be an opportunity for the reunion of the old teachers, principals and students of the college. While Konwar will be the chief guest on the occasion, the guests of the honour will be DN Sahay, former governor of Chhatisgarh and presently chairman of the AN Sinha Institute of Social Studies, and former chief justice of Punjab, Haryana and Sikkim high court Justice (retired) Vinod Rai. Both happen to be the alumni of the college. Singh said the college would revive its old journal, 'Current studies and research journal'. "This will be released by the governor. Since 1988, it was not being published. Besides, we have also prepared a souvenir and a calendar to mark the occasion," he added.
On the occasion, the college will also honour winners of different extra-curricular activities, viz. essay competition, debate, quiz, etc. organised in its 150th year. "We have also named the eastern gate of the college opening towards Darbhanga House as 'Sesquicentennial Gate'," he added.
In the evening, an alumni meet has been organised in the campus. All the former vice-chancellors and professors as well as students are expected to attend the function. In the evening, there will be a cultural programme. Last year, chief minister Nitish Kumar was the chief guest at the 150th foundation day function of the college. He had announced Rs. 2-crore assistance to the college last fiscal for repair and renovation of buildings.
A three-day 49th annual conference of Indian Econometrics Society will get underway at Patna Science College from January 9. It is being organised by the department of statistics, Patna University. This will be a great opportunity for teachers, researchers and students of economics to understand the latest advances in economics and statistics.
