The district administration organized a Lohri Fair, Dheeyan Di Lohri, (lohri of daughters) with help of Red Cross Society and NGO 'Upkar Co-ordination society' at the Shivalik Public School on Tuesday.
More than 100 new born girls were given gifts by the administration and the
panchayats, women sarpanchs, girl students, women constables and others were also honoured for their achievement.
Deputy commissioner Tanu M Kashyap said it was a proud moment for Nawanshahr residents that that Punjab and Haryana high court had recently ordered to other districts to adopt 'Nawanshahr Model' for aborting attempts at female foeticide.
He added that a television show Satyamev Jayate had also highlighted the efforts of the Nawanshahr administration in tackling evils like female foeticide.
She added that it was due to the efforts of officials and NGOs that the district a 71 point increase into sex ratio from 808 to 879 in 0-6 category during last ten years and into whole category, the sex ration has increased from 914 to 954 in the district.
"Girls are not less than boys in any field. It was important that female foeticide is stopped so that there is balance between nature and society."
SSP Dhanpreet Kaur said that in a region like Doaba, where the male is usually out abroad to make money, girls are a huge helping hand for families
A song, 'Sun Teri Ladli Di babla Pukar ve' (listen voice of your daughter, Father) presented by the girls of Pragati Kala Centre, received a round of applause and it made the audiences emotional.
President of Upkar Co-ordination society, Jaspal Singh Gidda, also addressed the gathering and highlighted the efforts of NGO in creating awareness through Parbhat Feris (morning processions), Nukkad Nataks and other innovative and easy-to-grasp mediums.
