Pakistan has called for an independent inquiry into the killing of two Indian soldiers in a cross-border violation, saying that UN observers should investigate the matter. Earlier, Pakistan has said that the allegations were "baseless and unfounded".

A senior military officer told newsmen in Islamabad that the incident had set off alarm bells in Pakistan. Local analysts in Pakistan are also highlighting the matter, with some saying that India is using the matter to "show Pakistan in a bad light." Kamran Khan, who hosts a popular talk show in Pakistan, commented that India was using the killings as a "propaganda ploy after killing a Pakistani soldier".

At the same time, the Pakistan foreign office on Wednesday stated that Pakistan is prepared to hold investigations through the UN Observer Group for India and Pakistan, which has offices on both sides of the line of control. The statement came after foreign minister Hina Rabbani Khar told reporters in Islamabad that her country "does not believe in tit-for-tat killings".

The feeling in Pakistan is that given the nature of the attacks, there is a possibility that militants were involved.
