Prabhjot was in the driver's seat and threatened the police personnel by using his father's name. Assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Keten Baliram Patil said the trio used abusive language against constable Gurlal and removed his turban in the altercation. While the ASP said the incident occurred near the railway station, the police record based on the complaint by Gurlal reportedly said it occurred a kilometre away, at Fauji Chowk.
Medical examination at the civil hospital confirmed that the three men had drunk excessive alcohol. Proceedings under sections 107 and 151 of the Criminal Procedure Code (preventive arrest) were initiated against the trio in the Kotwali police station, and a case under the Police Act for creating nuisance at public place was also registered.
TRYING TO SAVE FACE?After keeping them behind bars for the night, the police were to produce the men in front of the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) on Thursday. But in an attempt to keep them away from the media that had gathered outside the SDM office, the police presented them before a naib tehsildar on the roadside who immediately granted them bail and issued release orders. Yet, the efforts failed as the police entered the court of the SDM along with the accused to submit the record.
Prabhjot, who sports short hair, could cause all the more embarrassment to his father, as the SGPC wants the children of candidates and members to follow Sikh customs, which include unshorn hair.
