While the police claimed they had "nothing to do with such attempts at curtailing the liberty of citizens belonging to either gender", students - many of whom dubbed the instructions being provided the '20 Commandments of a Lazy Police Force' - expressed their disbelief and anger.
"This is really odd. Even if the intent is to provide safety instructions, why should these be directed only at women," asked Nikita Anand, a second-year student at Lady Shriram College (LSR) where the said posters had first been spotted.
"The posters were also found outside some co-educational schools. Why is there no mention of male students? The police don't want to do their own job and just want to keep shifting the blame to women," she added.
Police sources said the posters had been reported stuck prominently on the walls of women colleges, including LSR, Gargi, Kamla Nehru and Mata Sundari in addition to schools such as the Mathura Road branch of Delhi Public School (DPS) and Presentation Convent in north Delhi.
A senior police officer said the posters were removed wherever they were spotted immediately after angry reactions.
