Autopsy reports of the 16-year-old boy, who was allegedly killed by his classmate after he teased the latter, have been unable to ascertain the exact cause of death. The police have now sent the viscera sample of the victim, Irfan Qureshi, for chemical analysis.
reports are inconclusive. The viscera’s chemical analysis will help us ascertain how he died,” said Vijay Chavan, sub-inspector at the Oshiwara police station.
The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon after Qureshi and the accused, both Class 10 students at a Jogeshwari school, were coming out of their tuition classes at at Behrambaug in Jogeshwari (west). Police said the accused beat up Qureshi for teasing him for not attending classes and bunking lectures. Qureshi was taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
However, Qureshi’s family said that he could not have provoked the accused. Ismail, Qureshi’s uncle, said, “It does not seem logical that a frail boy like Irfan would provoke someone stronger than him. Irfan could not have teased him.”
Dilip Rupwate, senior inspector at Oshiwara police said: “The accused did not reveal anything during the interrogation. So far, it appears that the accused was enraged after Qureshi teased him.” The police have recorded statements of Qureshi’s batchmates and of the other eyewitnesses, including the employee of a sand supplier who reportedly intervened in the fight.
The teachers at the tuition centre said they were clueless about what led to the fight. The school where Qureshi studied remained shut on Friday following the incident.
“After the students left, I stayed back for evening prayers. A few minutes later, two students came running and told me that Irfan had fainted. We had no idea that he had a scuffle with the accused,” said a teacher, who did not wish to be named.
The teacher said the boys were to appear for their class 10 preliminary examinations on Friday and that Qureshi was a good student. “Irfan and the accused were both cheerful boys. This incident is extremely unfortunate,” the teacher added.
Qureshi is survived by two sisters and his parents.
