Former police commissioners believe that the transfer of assistant commissioner of police Vasant Dhoble had something to do with the political pressure. After fruit vendor Madan Jaiswal, 45, died where Dhoble conducted an eviction drive, MP Priya Dutt and MLA Kripashankar Singh had demanded action against Dhoble.

Former Mumbai police commissioner MN Singh said: “If the department had asked him to conduct the drive, they should stand by him. Getting rid of illegal stalls is a non-police function and should not be given so much priority. There are other serious crimes to be looked into first.”

Former IPS officer-turned-lawyer YP Singh said: “Transfer of a punitive nature as this one had to be done after due inquiry. ACP Dhoble had made many politicians uncomfortable. This is his second premature transfer while the stipulated tenure is three years.”

However, former commissioner D Sivanandhan said: “I would have taken the same action against Dhoble. One has to delve into the past and present doings of the officers. If the inquiry gives Dhoble a clean chit, then he can be reinstated to the same position.”

CM: Transfer aimed at ensuring impartial probe

Mumbai: Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said on Saturday that assistant commissioner of police Vasant Dhoble was transferred to a non-executive post to ensure an impartial probe into charges that his action caused the death of a hawker during an eviction drive outside  Santacruz station.

Chavan said at the Mumbai Press Club that the action was taken as a mere precaution because Dhoble’s presence in the existing jurisdiction could hinder probe and deposition of people who have alleged him of causing the death during the  anti-encroachment drive conducted along with civic officials.

The CM also acknowledged that local MP Priya Dutt and legislator Krishna Hegde (both from the Congress) met him to protest against Dhoble's actions.

He said that though the autopsy of the hawker confirmed he had died a natural death, the probe was necessary in view of the controversy and complaints.  HTC
