"The attackers' intent was to steal the pistol," said the SSP. "The policeman took severe injuries in the attack. We have registered a case under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 394 (injuring target during robbery), 341 (wrongful restraint), and 34 (crime with common intent) against five people. Main suspects Bheem Singh Bheema, Nishant, and Anil are under arrest, and a hunt is on for suspects Shama and Vipin Kumar.
The first criminal case against Bheema was registered in 1999. Since then, he is charged with more than a dozen crimes such as snatching, robbery and rape. He once escaped the police custody.
Reacting to a query about the attack on a police officer by the son of a local member of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), SSP Brar said every crime would be dealt with seriously, regardless of the culprit's status.
