"We as residents can act as the eye and ear of the police. We are trying to spread the message among fellow residents and will also work as a pressure group, apart from informers," said Rakesh Sharma, president of the Jan Jagran Manch.
The group members will create awareness among the residents about safety measures and publicise the police help line numbers. “We have been in talks with the police to work out a strategy,” said Sharma.
In a similar initiative, several residents' groups and NGOs came together at a workshop last week to discuss ways to improve safety of women in the city. They had also proposed the formation of a citizen police control room for parallel policing.
The residents also proposed social audits of the working of the police stations in the city.
