Gangraped and thrown out of a car, a girl from East Midnapore district in West Bengal is recuperating hundreds of kilometres away at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH), even as the police have started a suomotu case. A medical board will examine the victim on Monday.

The girl, a resident of Tuli Anantapur village, under Tamluk police station in East Midnapore district had been missing since Thursday. She was found abandoned many hundreds of kilometres away on National Highway 31, near Barotia, under Chakulia police station, in North Dinajpur district, on Friday night. The area is 45km from Islampur, the subdivisional headquarters.

Local residents informed the police and she was shifted to Chakulia Block Hospital, which referred her to NBMCH. Going by the girl’s statement, the police have started a gangrape case. Subimal Pal, sub-divisional police officer of Islampur, said, “The girl, wearing a salwar-kurta, was shivering in the cold when she was found.”

Sabyasachi Das, superintendent of NBMCH, said that the girl was in trauma and had caught a severe cold. A doctor at NBMCH attending on her said, “A medical board will examine the girl on Monday.”

Although no one could say anything with any certainty, the police said that, primafacie, the girl was gangraped and thrown out of the car. According to the girl, there were more than two people in the car.

Although the police and the doctors attending on her said the girl was sexually assaulted, the versions of the victim, the police and her family, as far as the place of her abduction is concerned, are contradictory.

Her mother and younger brother reached in Siliguri on Saturday. The mother said, “My daughter had left home to buy medicines from a local market.” The market is a 15-minute walk from the village. But the police said a railway ticket from Tamluk to Howrah had been recovered from the victim’s possession.

This has made things confusing with regard to her abduction. A big question now is whether she was abducted from her village or somewhere else.
