In a shocking incident along the Indo-Pak border fence, a Border Security Force (BSF) jawan, Sunil Kumar, committed suicide after shooting down his colleague, constable Mahesh Kumar, with his service rifle.
The incident took place on Monday night near the Border Observational Post (BOP)
Amar in the Amritsar sector near Chabhal in Tarn Taran when both were on duty. Both were from Rewari in Haryana.
According to BSF officials, Constable Sunil Kumar (28) was on patrolling duty and constable Mahesh (27) was guarding a ‘morcha’ near the fence.
Around 8:50 pm, constable Sunil Kumar came to the morcha and opened fire at Mahesh. Soon after, Sunil shot himself with the same service rifle. BSF claimed that Sunil used the INSAS Rifle and eight bullets were fired. Both died on the spot and the incident spread a shock wave.
Although the BSF officials stressed that they were yet to verify the reasons behind the incident, a note found from Sunil Kumar’s body indicated that this was a ‘pre-planned’ incident.
A hand-written note mentioned couple of lines of the song of a Hindi movie and also some lines indicated that Sunil had some serious tussle with Mahesh.
Sunil had also mentioned that his property be given to his mother and also that he has no complaint against anyone.
Talking to HT, a BSF official said, “Definitely, the hand-written note indicates that this was not sudden and was a planned incident. The police are now investigating the matter.”
Both constable Mahesh Kumar and Sunil Kumar had joined the border guarding force in 2007 and had undergone training together.
They were very good friends and we don’t know how this turned ugly, said a BSF official.
It is learnt that the BSF on its on part is also conducting a probe. The other colleagues of the two were also questioned to know that if there was some recent tiff or change in attitude between the two.
BSF claimed that both had come back from a vacation recently.
