Haryana's wheat production of 130.69 lakh tonnes with productivity of 5,182 kg per hectare in 2011-12 was the highest in the country. The previous year, too, the state had registered the highest wheat production in the state with 116.3 lakh tonnes of produce and productivity of 4,624 kg per hectare.
Two farmers of the state were given award of Rs. 1 lakh each along with a citation for the highest production of wheat per hectare. Ram Kumar of Sisai Bolan village in Hisar district produced 7,700 kg wheat per hectare, the highest ever in the country. Anita from Pasina Khurd village of Panipat district, who produced 6,320 kg wheat per hectare, the release said.
"Haryana had been the second largest contributor of foodgrains to the Central pool with the contribution of 86.65 lakh tonnes of wheat in 2011-12," Hooda told the media later. He called the bonus of Rs. 65 per quintal in the minimum support price (MSP) for wheat inadequate and hoped that higher price was in the offing.
