The police on Thursday arrested Rajinder Singh, alias Gopi, an accused in the suicide case of excise and taxation officer (ETO) Ranjit Singh. The number of arrests in the case has now gone up to four.
The SAS Nagar police, following a court order in August 2012, had booked superintendent
of police (SP) Amandeep Kaur, who was then posted with the Punjab vigilance bureau (VB), head constable Harminder Singh and traders Rajinder Singh, Rajiv Sood and Paramjit Singh who acted as complainants in the fake VB trap against the ETO. |
The accused were booked for abetting the ETO's suicide, besides other offences, in the FIR registered at the Phase 1 police station, SAS Nagar. The ETO, Ranjit Singh, was falsely implicated in March 2011 and had committed suicide a month later while on bail.
"A transporter, Rajinder Singh, aged about 30 years, was arrested by the SAS Nagar police from Ludhiana on Thursday," said SP (city) Swarndeep Singh.
"Rajinder would be produced in the court on Friday," said DSP (city) RS Sohal.
Paramjit and Sood were arrested earlier this month, while Amandeep had surrendered before the court on Tuesday. The three accused are in judicial custody. The fifth accused, Harminder Singh, is still at large.
The special investigation team (SIT) probing the matter had filed a challan before the court, indicting Amandeep, Harminder and the three traders for conspiring to falsely implicate Ranjit Singh, thus forcing him to commit suicide.
Meanwhile, the ETO's widow, Manjit Kaur, said, "Rajinder Singh was the main complainant in the fake vigilance trap. He verbally abused my husband and also slapped him in public… I wish I could do the same to him."
